Agriculture
Agriculture, also known as farming, is the cultivating of plants, animals and fungi that are used for food, fiber and other means to sustain life. The Agricultural Industry has gone through many changes since it was first used over 10,000 years ago. Farming is the main way a group sustained themselves, through communal sharing and trade. It has since become a major means of income for most countries today. Be it through livestock, fruit and vegetables, for food, to cotton, hemp, and silk for clothing. Farms throughout the world differ from region to region because of temperature, weather and geographic location, with certain types of farming exclusive to certain regions. Sugar for example is generally grown in tropical areas with moderate rain, where as mushrooms tend to grow better in areas with a lot of moisture. Farms are generally thought to exist only on land. But within the last 10-15 years, science has experimented with farms in the oceans of the world. Primarily used to harvest fish and other seafood, these fisheries, as they are called, have been created to respond to the demand of the world for certain types of seafood without driving species to extinction. One particular farming technique, whaling, has been outlawed around the world for its drastic impact to the population of whales in the world’s oceans. Other types of agriculture are used for the production of energy. Wind and Solar farms are being used to supplement the demand for energy by the masses. Without agriculture, this world would not be what it is today.
